Analyzing labor supply behavior with latent job opportunity sets and institutional choice constraints

چکیده
In this paper we discuss a general framework for analyzing labor supply behavior in the presence of complicated budgetand quantity constraints of which some may be unobservable. The point of departure is that an individual’s labor supply decision can be considered as a choice from a set of discrete alternatives (jobs). These jobs are characterized by attributes such as hours of work, sector specific wages and other sector specific aspects of the jobs. We focus in particular on theoretical justification of functional form assumptions and properties of the random components of the model. The paper also includes an empirical application based on Norwegian data, in which the labor supply of married women is estimated. JEL classification: J22,C51.

متن کاملFlexible Labor Supply Models
Flexible Labor Supply Models Discrete-choice models of labor supply have become very popular for ex ante evaluations of policy reforms as they easily account for non-convex budget sets. We test the constraints imposed in practice on these models and suggest a fully flexible model that significantly improves fit. JEL Classification: H31, J22
متن کاملAdjustment Costs, Firm Responses, and Micro vs. Macro Labor Supply Elasticities: Evidence from Danish Tax Records.
We show that the effects of taxes on labor supply are shaped by interactions between adjustment costs for workers and hours constraints set by firms. We develop a model in which firms post job offers characterized by an hours requirement and workers pay search costs to find jobs. We present evidence supporting three predictions of this model by analyzing bunching at kinks using Danish tax recor...
متن کاملHousehold choices in fragile families and their effects on children’s cognitive and non-cognitive skills
I present a structural model of labor and child-care options to analyze the impact of single mothers’ decisions on their children’s cognitive and non-cognitive development. Mothers decide on child-care arrangements and allocate their labor supply according to their preferences and constraints. I estimate the parameters of a production function of skills by applying simulation methods with data ...
متن کاملEconomic Approaches to Teacher Recruitment and Retention
The quality of teaching in a school results from a range of factors, including available resources, curriculum, and instructional leadership, but it is also driven by the individuals who teach in each classroom. The staffing of teachers in schools, in turn, is a product of both recruitment and retention practices. This article describes how the choices of teachers and the actions of schools and...
